One of THOSE days

7:30am: Woke up to our smoke detector beeping. Just little tiny bursts of "beeeeeeeeep! beep." Silence.

Maybe just dust in the sensor...maybe just a tweak in the line since it's been so cold...didn't think much of it.

Went to work. Helped out a little by painting scenery before jumping into what turned out to be kind of a torturous rehearsal. The words, "Work -thru" didn't even come into play. Lots of work, no thru.

I digress.

As we all know, it's cold. Damn cold. Memphis is not to be left out. It's cold here, too.

As my roommate / assistant and I are heading out for the day (10:30pm-ish) she gets a call from our apartment complex maintenance guy. Apparently our smoke detectors have been going off all day and the neighbors are now complaining. We're told a maintenance guy will meet us at the apartment and fix the problem.

Ok, right? Yeah. Right.

We get home and there is no guy.

For some reason our garage door isn't working now. This means, that we are now locked out of our apartment because our front door has a double lock, but only one lock cane be unlocked from the outside and since we left via the garage (when the door was working) the front door remained doubled locked from the inside. Make sense?

We can hear the alarms as we stand outside.

Did I mention it's cold?

Calling on my inner MacGyver, I trudge back to the garage and try to figure out why the door is not working. Upon a not so close inspection, I can see that someone had already tried to open our gararge door by force. It looked like they succeeded, but didn't know they succeeded. They had popped the manual release which disengages the door from the electric arm / track.

So, I squat down, slip my fingers under the weather stripping on the door and pull up. Voila. The garage door is now open and my roommate and I can get inside out of the cold...

and into the screaching alarms, violent beeping bouncing off the tile floors and narrow hallways.

and still no guy.

I have work I have to do, so I stuff toilet paper in my ears and sat down at my computer while the roommate calls maintenance.

There were a couple of excuses from the maintenance folks:
1) oh, they were waiting for us to get home before they sent someone.

2) the guy they sent fell asleep and isn't coming

After an hour or so later of sitting in the apartment I am truly getting nauseaus from the noise. The guy arrives, replaces three of our smoke detectors and leaves. 12:15am.

8:30am: new day: my ears are ringing.

how can you possibly look so cute with tp in your ears? i have to say that i probably would've taken a baseball bat to the detector. Maybe to the "repairman," too... you get bonus points for self-control!

my ears are still ringing from a birthday party that I took Maddy to (on her birthday no less - her party was MUCH better). The level of noise in that house amazed even me. It takes a lot to amaze me in the noise level department!
